Terms and Definitions

Bracket:

the metal artifact that is fixed to the tooth.
Composed of three parts:

1. Retention base:
Where composite resin is placed to fix the bracket to the tooth.

2. Bracket body:
Permits the insertion of the slot.

3. Slot

Archwire:

The archwire can be round, square or rectangular. The choice depends on the function that the orthodontist desires.

 

Archwire in the  slot:

The archwire is tied into the slot with elastics in order to exert a force over the tooth. The force then moves it into the desired position.

Appliance:

Also called “braces”. The set of brackets, arches and accessaries placed in the mouth in order to correct the malocclusion.
